"Forêt, Carnac": scratchboard and ink, 7.5" x 10", 1999 - As a student at Pont Aven School of Contemporary Art (PASCA) in 1999, I spent time exploring the landscape of Carnac, a site known for its neolithic menhirs (standing stones) and rolling woods. This scratchboard drawing was developed from a quick sketch that I made on a late-afternoon hike on the area.
"Brother": Watercolour on 300 lb cold press paper, 16" x 20", early 2000s - My brother Tony Wallace is a talented musician and luthier, and has always been a creative sounding board to me. This painting was made as a gift to him. Private Collection
"Dieppe": watercolour on 140 lb, cold press paper, 2001 - I visited Dieppe on Canada Day (July 1) while studying in France, and was forever changed by the experience. NFS
"Raguenez": oil paint on canvas, 12" x 36", 2003 - Inspired by many afternoons spent on Plage de Raguénez (Raguénez beach) in Nevez - Finistère, France. NFS
"Gilding the ...": soft pastel on Mi-Teints board, 16" x 20", 2003 - I spent a few years deep in still-life studies, but always with a focus on creating slightly absurdist narratives. This one was a favourite. NFS
"Esse": 2005, oil on paper (mounted to canvas), 16" x 20" - One of a collection of portraits painted on textured, handmade papers. Private collection.
"Hawk": 2009, 12" x 16", oil on canvas - Inspired by the dramatic skies and wild birds we saw on our honeymoon in Newfoundland in 2007. The sky was painted first, then blocked out with a handmade stencil and over-painted. Making these paintings felt like doing a trust fall.
"Crow": 2009, 12" x 16", oil on canvas - Inspired by the dramatic skies and wild birds we saw on our honeymoon in Newfoundland in 2007. The sky was painted first, then blocked out with a handmade stencil and over-painted. Making these paintings felt like doing a trust fall.
